Non-Surgical Eyelid Tightening

Firmer upper eyelids without a scalpel: the fractional CO2 laser tightens the eyelid skin by building collagen – as an outpatient procedure, without an incision and without sutures.

Who the method is suitable for

Laser tightening works where the eyelid skin has lost elasticity but there is no significant excess of skin – that is, with mild to moderate hooded eyelids and fine lines around the eyes. If the skin hangs over so far that it presses on the lashes or restricts the field of vision, there is no way around surgical eyelid correction. We are honest with you in the consultation about which route is the right one – even if that means advising against the laser.

How the tightening works

The fractional CO2 laser creates microscopically fine treatment channels in the eyelid skin. The controlled heat causes the collagen fibres to contract immediately and then stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin over a period of weeks. The skin draws together and becomes thicker – the eyelid looks more open and the gaze more alert.

The procedure

After an anaesthetic cream has been left to work for 30 to 45 minutes, we treat the upper eyelid in about 30 minutes. Metal eye shields reliably protect the eyeball while we do so. Immediately afterwards the eyelids are red and swell noticeably over the first 48 hours – this is the normal course of events and not a complication. From day three to four, fine brownish crusts form which fall off by day seven.

  • Cool the area for the first two days and sleep with your head raised
  • No eye make-up for seven days
  • Consistent sun protection for four weeks
  • Leave out contact lenses for a week
  • If you are prone to cold sores, preventive medication

Result and how long it lasts

An initial tightening is visible after one to two weeks, the final result after about six weeks, once collagen formation is complete. Where the findings are more pronounced, a second session after three months may be useful. The result usually lasts two to four years – after that the skin continues to age normally.

Frequently asked questions

How much does non-surgical eyelid tightening cost?
Both upper eyelids from €650, upper and lower eyelids together from €1,150. The consultation including an explanation of the procedure is charged at €50 under the GOÄ.
Laser or surgery – which is better?
That depends on the findings. For mild to moderate hooded eyelids without a significant excess of skin, the laser is a good alternative. Where the excess is pronounced, surgery is the more effective procedure.
How long will I be out of action?
Four to seven days. For the first two days the eyelids are noticeably swollen, after which fine crusts form.
How long does the result last?
Usually two to four years. After that the skin continues to age normally; a top-up treatment is possible.
Is the treatment dangerous for the eyes?
No. Metal eye shields fully protect the eyeball during the treatment.
